Visual Music and the Beat Generation
Filmmaker Joost Rekveld has compiled a programme of films for E*Cinema from the era of the Beats when writers and filmmakers such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Hy Hirsh and John Whitney were inspired by the freely improvised patterns of bebop. Live musical accompaniment will be provided by the jazz quartet The Ambush Party.
Many of the highlights of abstract animation were created during the 1950s in a climate determined by a unique mix of jazz, altered states, eastern mysticism and modern technology. Filmmakers came up with ways to enable improvisation in abstract film as a visual equivalent to jazz. The programme runs from smoking joints together in Vipers through James Whitney and Jordan Belson's cosmic visions to the utopian urban models of artist Constant in Gyromorphosis.Jazz quartet The Ambush Party will accompany the screening live.
