Annette
Leos Carax / FR, BE, US, 2021 / 139 min.
Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard are ill-fated lovers in Annette, which is told entirely in song. Leos Carax’ sixth feature film opened the Cannes film festival and is an exciting, layered exploration of the marriage between a rough-and-ready stand-up comedian and a famous opera singer. Their child, Annette, is about to turn their lives upside down.
For his first non-French-language production, Carax (Les amants du Pont-Neuf, Holy Motors) was approached by Ron and Russell Mael, better known as Sparks – the studio band who take nothing and no one seriously and inspired The Petshop Boys, Kaftwerk and Queen. The overwhelming film musical Annette is the result of their collaboration.
Short animation Bristles, directed by Quentin Haberham, is screened before the feature.
