The Programme

Cinedans FEST ’24 hosts the International Competition, presents the best dance films from 44 countries and hands out the prestigious Cinedans Awards! Dive into the New Dutch and discover the most recent developments and premieres of the blooming home-grown scene, and don’t miss exciting subjects and in-depth perspectives in our Specials, Features & Documentaries.

The Themes of FEST ’24

RITUALS & HEALING
Rituals are deeply rooted in humankind and help us ward off everyday dangers and cope with uncertain times. Their practice can be celebratory and a source of healing. Like in documentary Kite Zo A – Leave the Bones by Kaveh Nabatian, about the Vodou rituals that birthed Haiti, or A Drifting Up by Jacob Lee about his daily practice of dancing with pedestrians (programme Short Docs: Returning to Play).

RESISTANCE, RESILIENCE & FREEDOM
Artists have always resisted the suppression of freedom by telling stories of struggle and thriving, and revealing the resilience of the body and the human spirit. Dancing is a poetic act of defiance in the Iranian film And me, I’m dancing too by Mohammad Vaizadegan (programme IC: Unyielding Fires), and Ampe: Leap into the Sky, Black Girl by Claudia Owusu & Ife Oluwamuyide, demonstrates the desire of young girls to be unconditionally free (programme Short Docs: Returning to Play).

GRIEF & RECONCILING THE PAST
We are in a time in which the world is struggling with grief and trying to find ways to reconcile with the past. Filmmakers and choreographers use dance film to confront personal and world history, channel emotions and articulate new futures. Highlights include, La Ultima Ascensión by Kevin Osepa, who re-approaches post-colonialism and re-imagines the Afro-Caribbean identity (programme New Dutch: Wondering Worlds) and Through Magma by Elisabeth Raymond, about the plastic in the ocean and our liquid borders (programme IC: Poetic Moves).

Specials

In the Special Breaking the Chains we show films with postcolonial themes from different countries and (historical) perspectives. They portray ancestral rituals, struggles for independence, spirituality and how the effects of slavery persist into the present. A thematic line that includes a curation of exclusive short films and the documentaries Kite Zo A – Leave the Bones by Kaveh Nabatian, Kumina Queen by Nyasha Laing and Uprooted: The Journey of Jazz Dance by Khadifa Wong.

Guest curator Helena Jonsdottir, director of the Physical Cinema Festival in Reykjavik brings Iceland in the Eye, a fascinating programme that pulls us into the heart of Iceland. Prepare for breathtaking landscapes and some humorous endeavours.

Last but not least, with Cinedans FEST 20 years, we present a celebratory programme featuring the very best dance films from Cinedans FEST over the past 20 years, including shared memories by previous staff members, partners, friends and the audience of Cinedans.

In addition, Cinedans FEST '24 features lectures, a masterclass, a professionals programme, a pitch and a public presentation of the 14 artists of the Moving Media Lab. Don’t miss out on our free screenings and installations in Eye: The Best of Cinedans FEST and installations including Civil Twilight - Choreography For 450nm and 600nm van Andrea Božić and Julia Willms | TILT (2023), State of Flow by Anna Fríða Jónsdóttir and Circuit Bending by Meg Stuart.
